Types of cancer treatment
Oncology is divided into two groups – Surgical oncology, medical oncology and radiation oncology.
Surgical oncology
In surgical oncology, surgery is the treatment method recommended. There are different types of cancer surgeries. In the past, surgery only meant cutting open the body and cutting out the tumour. But in recent times, surgical techniques have advanced. Laparoscopic surgery can be successfully used for cancer treatment.
With minimally invasive surgeries, you can remove the tumour alone without removing the whole organ or part. The patient does not have to stay in the hospital for too long after the surgery since the recovery time is very low.
Medical oncology
Chemotherapy is involved in medical oncology. Chemotherapy through medications or IVs is usually recommended and recently targeted chemotherapy and immunotherapy have gained popularity.

Targeted therapy is used to treat genetic cancers. The cancer gene would produce abnormal proteins in the body which is targeted in the therapy. The complication rate with this therapy is very low.
Immunotherapy involves stimulating the body’s own immune system to fight against cancer.
Bone marrow transplantation would be helpful for blood-related cancers.
Radiation oncology
In the past, cobalt radiation was used for treating cancers. But now high energy radiations are used along state-of-the-art technologies.
