Hypertension and Kidney Diseases

Hypertension and Kidney Diseases

There are two angles when it comes to the link between hypertension and kidney diseases - hypertension as the cause of kidney diseases and high blood pressure due to kidney diseases.

Hypertension as the cause of kidney diseases

Long-standing diabetes and long-standing hypertension are the most common causes of kidney diseases. Hypertension for a long time can cause tiredness, inflammation of the legs and chronic kidney disease. Uncontrolled blood pressure leads to Hypertensive nephroangiosclerosis which causes irreversible changes to the kidneys.

Kidney disease as the cause of hypertension

There are other reasons for kidney diseases like congenital diseases, kidney stone disease, autoimmune diseases and more. In some cases, it can cause high blood pressure.

A normal blood pressure rate is 130/80 but for people with kidney diseases, 120/80 would be recommended range of blood pressure by the kidney doctors.

It is important to maintain the blood pressure in the optimal range since high blood pressure would only worsen kidney disease. High blood pressure can also damage other organs like the eyes, heart and brain.

The kidney is the master regulator of blood pressure. There are two types of patients with hypertension – salt-sensitive hypertension and salt-insensitive hypertension. People with salt-sensitive hypertension might suffer from bloating, breathlessness and more complaints. This is because of excessive sodium content that the kidney could not handle. These patients would be recommended by the doctor to reduce their intake of salt and water in their diet.

For people with salt-insensitive hypertension, limiting salt and water in their diet would not help. In that case, blood pressure medications are prescribed. A rare group of people would have renal artery stenosis. There would be a blockage in the artery supplying blood to the kidney and this can cause increased blood pressure.
